⚫️Fiber Fine Art ⚫️Creators of Sculptural Wall Installations Rooted in Art Heritage ⚫️University of Maryland Special Collections ⚫️Works by Inquiry

Alla and Milana Borovskaia are a mother-daughter artist duo specializing in contemporary wall sculpture and installation. Their work is deeply influenced by patterns found in nature and expands ancient textile techniques of wool felting through a new approach.

Grounded in heritage, expanded through innovation — Alla and Milana Borovskaia have pushed forward the boundaries of the medium. Born in the North Caucasus region of Russia and now permanently based in Baltimore, Maryland, they draw from both inherited tradition and contemporary vision to create sculptural works from sheep’s wool. Over the course of many years of research — their practice explores new possibilities within the medium of wool. Through hand layering and shaping shapeless dyed fibers, they create forms that are both lightweight and structurally stable, with a soft suede-like surface. The resulting pieces are hypoallergenic, durable, safe, and unique for public spaces.

Alla, the lead artist of the team, has over 30 years of experience as a practicing artist. Her passion for art began in early childhood, inspired by her grandmother and great-grandmother, and blossomed into a lifelong artistic path. Milana, who grew up in her mother’s studio, absorbed the techniques and philosophy of the practice from a young age. For over ten years, she has played an integral role in the team.

Their collaborative works are known for their signature style, and are found in both public and private collections. Their projects include: a large-scale installation across two floors of the Grassroots Community Center in Columbia, Maryland, which received numerous heartfelt responses such as “It evokes positive feelings of warmth that I'm looking for." (Center resident). They have partnered with cultural organizations across Maryland, actively engaging with the public through exhibitions, open studios, workshops, and community outreach— including the Sandy Spring Museum, the Chesapeake Arts Center, the Delaplaine Arts Center, the Montpelier Arts Center, and others. Both artists have received multiple awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, including the Folklife Apprenticeship Award. Work created through this program has been archived in the University of Maryland's Special Collections.

Why wool? Wool carries living, genuine energy and is among the oldest known materials used in textile art. It hasn’t passed through the moment of death, as the animals are not harmed in the process. The wool we use is ethically and humanely sourced in line with our values.

Historical background:

The tradition of working with wool fibers to create art and decor is among the oldest known practices in human history, dating back more than 5000 thousands of years. Wool’s tactile warmth, rich surface, and natural resilience.

In the 20th century, textile art began to move into the realm of contemporary fine art. The international fiber art movement, gaining momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, redefined textile work as a sculptural and conceptual medium. Pioneering artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hicks, Lenore Tawney, and Claire Zeisler. As a mother-daughter artist duo, we see our work as part of the ongoing evolution of fiber art. Following the path opened by the pioneers of the international fiber art movement, we use wool not merely as a textile material, but as a medium for contemporary artistic expression. Through experimentation with form, structure, and scale, we contribute to the continuing expansion of fiber art in the 21st century, bridging traditional knowledge with contemporary sculpture and installation practices.
